
Christina Romer, the chair of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, says spending from the $787 billion economic stimulus has already had its biggest impact on economic growth and will likely not contribute to significant expansion next year.
At the same time, 49 of the 50 states saw higher unemployment numbers. Only California saw a big drop-off in new claims, while Florida, New York, Wisconsin and Indiana reported more job cuts in industries such as construction, manufacturing and the car sector.
